Pair, share & care - chromosomes throughout life
Vienna, September 24th-25th, IMP lecture Hall
Welcome to the home page of the PhD Symposium Pair, Share & Care – Chromosomes throughout life organized by the students of the doctoral program ‘Chromosome Dynamics’ at the Vienna Biocenter Campus.
In higher eukaryotes, genetic information encoded by DNA is packaged into the nucleus in thread-like, linear structures called chromosomes. Intact chromosomes are crucial for maintenance and faithful transmission of the genetic information from one generation to the next. Failure to protect DNA from deterioration, impaired DNA repair or miss-segregation of chromosomes during cell division can seriously compromise the fitness of an organism.
Fascinated by the essentiality of these fundamental cell structures, we decided to organize a symposium shedding light on a broad spectrum of biological phenomena and findings connected with chromosomes: chromosome integrity and dynamics, their role during meiosis & fertilization as well as their implication in ageing & disease. As reflected by the title of this symposium, ‘Pair, Share & Care – Chromosomes throughout life’, the functions of chromosomes are as diverse as the research being performed on them. We therefore aim to provide a forum where the versatile, scientific endeavors in this field can be presented and constructively discussed. The selected speakers, leading international figures in chromosome biology, mirror our wish to look at one of the most exciting areas of contemporary research from many different perspectives.
